One night in October, 17-year-old Joseph found himself alone and without a safe place to sleep. After a heated argument with his mother, he was kicked out of their home. With nowhere else to go, Joseph considered spending the night in a parking lot just to avoid the conflict. As he sat alone in the dark, Joseph remembered something important: Safe Place had visited his school earlier that year. He recalled their message clearly, that help was just a phone call away.
Joseph still had the safety card in his backpack and called The Children’s Cabinet’s 24/7 Safe Place hotline around midnight. Within minutes, a Safe Place case manager was on the road, driving directly to meet Joseph where he was. After an honest conversation with Joseph, our case manager arranged shelter for the night to keep him off the streets and ensure he was in a safe environment.
In the days that followed, our case manager stayed close, not only offering support but also acting as a compassionate mediator between Joseph and his mother. We learned that their relationship had been strained. Joseph had spent most of his life in foster care and had only recently returned home with his mother.
Through individualized case management, we helped Joseph and his mom begin to rebuild trust and communication that their family had been missing. Through several difficult conversations and practical agreements, they found common ground and a path forward.
Since that night in October, both Joseph and his mom have shown remarkable commitment. They’ve been engaging consistently, working toward shared goals, and embracing the supportive services offered by The Children’s Cabinet. In just a short time, they’ve made meaningful progress, strengthening their bond as a family.
Joseph’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of early outreach. Because Safe Place had visited his school, he knew where to turn in a moment of crisis. Today, Joseph and his mom are grateful for the intervention that kept their family together, and they’re moving forward, together, toward a more stable future.
